Uzbekistan to host major forum to combat desertification in 2023

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of the State Forestry Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan took part in the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which was held from 10 to 21 May in the city of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. 

Un 2023, Uzbekistan will be one of the first among the CIS countries to host a meeting of the Executive Committee of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought. The event will be held with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). 

At the opening ceremony of the conference, the national project "Yashil Makon", initiated by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and aimed at large-scale tree planting throughout the country, air purification in cities and villages, adaptation to climate change and combating desertification, was especially noted. 

At the event, the delegation of Uzbekistan also provided information on the measures taken in our country to combat the risks of drought and salinization, highlighting a number of initiatives and projects being implemented in this area. 

In particular, the projects implemented jointly with FAO were mentioned, namely the project “Integrated natural resource management in drought-prone and saline agricultural production landscapes of Central Asia and Turkey” and “Central Asia Desert Initiative”.
