UZBEKISTAN – RUSSIA: IMPORTANT ROLE OF PARLIAMENTS IN ENHANCING COOPERATION

On October 2, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan hosted a meeting between the Chairperson of the Senate Tanzila Narbayeva and the Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko.

Intensification of inter-parliamentary relations was noted at the meeting. Over 10 parliamentary visits were conducted last year. This contributes to further development of Uzbekistan – Russia relations, in particular, cooperation within the framework of international parliamentary structures.

At the meeting, T. Narbayeva invited representatives of the Federation Council and the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly to participate as observers in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan this year. In addition, views were exchanged on further development of relations between the Senate and the Council of the Federation, the use of parliamentary resources, active formation of a legal framework aimed at eliminating obstacles to further intensifying bilateral cooperation in implementing the agreements reached after the talks between Presidents of the two countries.

The need for further ensuring consistent interparliamentary dialogue between Uzbekistan and Russia, implementation of programs for the exchange of experience in accelerating legal support for reforms, socio-economic development, ratification of bilateral treaties and agreements was noted at the event.

Following the meeting, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Institute of Problems of Legislation and Parliamentary Studies under the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Office of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
