Kukeldash Madrasah in Tashkent is one of the magnificent historical monuments.

The building stands on a hill in the capital’s Chorsu Square. The madrasah was built during the reign of Shaybanid Dynasty by the vizier, close to Tashkent sultans Barak Khan and Dervish Khan. The vizier’s pseudonym was Kukeltash, which means “Khan’s foster brother”.

There is a mosque at the entrance on the left side and on the right – domed study rooms (darskhana). There is a wide courtyard around which there are cells and an open veranda. 38 cells and study rooms are connected to the mosque.

Previously, the building was three-storied, but only two floors have been preserved to our time.

During the years of independence, the Kukeldash Madrasah was given the status of an architectural monument and brought into proper shape. Since 1999, the Kukeldash secondary specialized Islamic education institution has been operating here.
