The role of parliament in protection of rights

International virtual workshop has taken place on “The role of Parliament in improving the legal framework on torture prevention under the National preventive mechanism” within the framework of the National Strategy of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights.

 

The event was organized by the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the National Center for Human Rights in cooperation with Inter-Parliamentary Union, OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, UN Permanent Mission to Uzbekistan and OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan.
 
It was noted that the adoption of a long-term National strategy for human rights will contribute to formation of respect for human rights and freedoms in Uzbekistan and further strengthen its image in the international arena. It is planned to increase the role of Parliament and civil society institutions in achieving the sustainable development goals of Uzbekistan until 2030, strengthen the rule of law, harmonize national legislation and law enforcement practices with international human rights obligations.

Issues of increasing the role of Parliament in implementing the recommendations of the UN international human rights mechanisms for prevention of torture were discussed.
