Global climate change, environmental pollution, increasing household and industrial waste, water scarcity, and the disappearance of biodiversity are all exacerbating the ecological situation in the world.

In Uzbekistan, a proposal is being put forward to create shaded walking and cycling streets on the main sidewalks of 32 cities and districts. The project provides for bringing the level of landscaping in the country to 14.1 percent, as well as the construction of 80 infrastructure facilities and health trails for the population with a length of more than 110 kilometers in coastal areas and along rivers. This is noted in the prepared draft decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On the State Program for the Implementation of the Uzbekistan 2030 Strategy in the Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy.

Green zones reduce depression

According to the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, based on appeals and suggestions from the population in the territories, it is necessary to create conditions for promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Scientists from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China) studied the environment and psychological state of people, analyzed data on well-being, diseases, and mortality, and concluded that staying in green areas for a long time reduces depression and eliminates anxiety.

What are the advantages?

The project will help reduce air pollution on busy sidewalks by 5-10 percent and air temperature by 3-5 degrees, increase people’s physical activity, and promote a healthy lifestyle.

The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change and Digital Technologies will launch a platform by June 1 as part of the nationwide movement “One Million Green Families”, according to which citizens who have completed at least 10,000 steps per day will be awarded the status of “Eco-active Citizen” and given a 10 percent discount when using government services, consumer loans from banks with a government share of more than 50 percent.
