Uzbekistan celebrates National Flag Day

November 18 is the Day of the adoption of the State Flag of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

It is impossible to imagine the political independence of the state and its place on the world stage without its flag, anthem, and emblem.

The national flag of the Republic of Uzbekistan has proudly flown abroad as a symbol representing the Republic of Uzbekistan in international relations.

Let us recall the most important historical facts and events at which the flag of Uzbekistan was raised for the first time.

The Law “On the State Flag of the Republic of Uzbekistan” was adopted on November 18, 1991, at the Extraordinary VII Session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and from that day the State Flag of the Republic of Uzbekistan was raised high in Uzbekistan as a symbol of independence, freedom and stability.

On March 2, 1992, the Republic of Uzbekistan became a member of the United Nations. Since that day, the flag of Uzbekistan has been proudly flying at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Türkiye, one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Uzbekistan, has a special place in the annals of the independent development of Uzbekistan. Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Uzbekistan were established on March 4, 1992, and in April of the same year, the Turkish embassy was opened in Tashkent. In May 1993, the Embassy of Uzbekistan was opened in Ankara, and in October 1996, the Consulate General of Uzbekistan began its work in Istanbul. Since then, the flag of Uzbekistan has been raised high on Turkish land.

The United States is also one of the countries among the first to recognize the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on February 19, 1992, the first embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the United States was opened in February 1993. Since then, the flag of Uzbekistan began to fly in the United States.

Uzbekistan as an independent country became a member of UNESCO on October 26, 1993. The country actively participates in the work of this organization in all areas. Starting from this date, the flag of Uzbekistan flies in front of the headquarters of the organization, in Paris.

In 1992, by the decree of First President Islam Karimov, Uzbekistan Airways was established. The first flights were made within the country, and later the first flight on the Tashkent – London route was launched. And thus, the airliners of Uzbekistan with the image of our national flag began to fly to international destinations.

The 372nd cosmonaut of the world, the 88th cosmonaut of Russia and the first cosmonaut of Uzbekistan Salijan Sharipov made his first space flight, which lasted from January 23 to 31, 1998. He also planted the flag of Uzbekistan at the North Pole.

On June 1, 2021, Uzbek climber Sergey Denisenko conquered Everest and planted the flag of Uzbekistan and a photo of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev there. It was the first ascent of Uzbekistan representative on the famous mountain.

In 2019, in honor of the visit of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the United Arab Emirates, as well as on the occasion of the celebration of the Independence Day of Uzbekistan on September 1, 2020, the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, was lit up in the colors of Uzbekistan flag. The shining colors of the flag could be seen from all sides of the city.

Over the past 31 years, the flag of Uzbekistan has been raised high in honor of the victories of the country’s athletes at many international sports tournaments and the Olympic Games, and such exciting events are gaining a particularly large scale.
