Uzbekistan, Afghanistan enhance collaboration in higher education

During one of the sessions on humanitarian development as the path to lasting peace in Afghanistan, held within the framework of the Tashkent International Conference on Afghanistan, the prospects for enhancing collaboration between higher education institutions of the two states, further increasing the number of Afghan youth studying at the universities of Uzbekistan, as well as training and advanced training of specialists in various fields, were discussed.

The participants talked about ongoing joint practical work, several projects were presented. The starting point of cooperation in this regard was the creation in Surkhandarya region, bordering Afghanistan, of the Educational Center for training Afghan citizens. According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the ministries of higher education of the two countries to further enhance existing ties, a procedure has been established for the education of Afghan citizens not only in the educational center of Termez district, but also in other higher education institutions throughout Uzbekistan.

The number of joint projects has been increasing. In particular, in March 2022, another project was launched in partnership with the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education, the EU delegation and the Permanent Mission of the United Nations Development Programme in Uzbekistan. It is aimed at training and advanced training of Afghanistan citizens.

The one-year courses of the project with a total budget of 1 million euros will train 100 people. 48 people were trained in the first stage of three-month courses.

As part of the initiative, it is planned to finance the training of 336 Afghan citizens. At the moment, one-year and three-month professional courses are being organized in such educational areas as transport and auto repair, tailoring, computer science and information technology (web developer), agribusiness and marketing, computer science and information technology.

A partnership has been established between the universities of the two countries to further improve the quality of education. In this process, Tashkent State University of the Uzbek Language and Literature named after Alisher Navoi, Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies and Tashkent State Transport University are cooperating with the Balkh University of Afghanistan.
