Tashkent to become a megacity

13.08.2025 09:35

In the name of the Motherland, in the name of the nation, in the name of the people!

Over the past ten to fifteen years, the population of Tashkent has increased sharply. The desire of people to live in the capital, along with the growing demand for housing, transportation, and social infrastructure due to population growth, is a natural process.

In recent years, the pace of construction in the capital has accelerated significantly thanks to increased investment appeal. New residential buildings, business centers, hotels, as well as cultural and sports complexes, are expanding the city’s capabilities, and this is not the limit: measures are being taken in line with its rapid development.

As is known, construction of New Tashkent has already begun. In the future, these two territories will form a single modern megacity. The project will help ease the burden on the capital and distribute it across the entire city.

The first stone in the foundation of the new city was laid on March 18, 2023. Shortly, it will host the campuses of New Uzbekistan University and Tashkent State Pedagogical University, the National Library, the National Theatre, the Alisher Navoi International Research Center, the Museum of Literature, the National Center of Maqom, and multi-storey residential buildings.

The Head of State has repeatedly emphasized that this modern area must become a green city. This means that priority will be given to clean air and water, alternative energy sources, and abundant greenery. Just imagine: a Central Park covering more than 400 hectares will be laid out here, with two hundred thousand trees planted. Without exaggeration, it will be a true eco-city.

When building a modern megacity that will serve future generations for many years, quality is, of course, of paramount importance. For this reason, in construction work, the priority is given to quality and safety.

Another promising project in this area is the construction of a metro line to the new city, which will start from the current “Dustlik” metro station. The length of this line is expected to exceed 20 kilometers, and it will serve up to 200,000-250,000 passengers daily. The mention of the new metro line is no coincidence. It means that the two cities will be connected and will form a single megacity.

These ideas were also emphasized on July 9, when the Head of State reviewed the presentation of the “Solutions Atlas” for Tashkent and New Tashkent. To ensure balanced territorial development, the General Plan of Tashkent for the period up to 2045 was adopted. It sets out key indicators for the city’s construction plans, engineering, and road transport infrastructure, as well as protected areas.

“The President was also presented with a presentation of road construction projects in the capital”, said Shavkat Umurzakov, Hokim of Tashkent city. “Reputable companies will be involved in this work. Today, reconstruction is underway on Shota Rustaveli Street in Yakkasaray district based on a new approach. In the same manner, 200 kilometers of roads and four overpasses will be built in our city. According to the current standard, road construction and repair are carried out within the ‘red line’ of the roadway. In developed cities, this is done according to the principle of ‘from building to building’ on both sides of the street. This way, there will be no neglected sections, and road shoulders will be landscaped in an integrated and proportional manner. In this case, the roadway, pedestrian paths, green areas, and building facades will be arranged in an orderly fashion. These tasks will make our city even more beautiful and create additional conveniences for the population”.

A few words should be said about the “Solution Atlas”. It is a logical continuation of the General Plan and contains general requirements for the city’s appearance and urban environment. This is a catalog consisting of five volumes, which includes rules for the design, installation, and use of structures, recommendations for the organization and improvement of public spaces, and guidelines for bringing the appearance of buildings into a unified architectural style. In urban environment design, primary attention is given to alignment with sustainable development goals and the preservation of national identity.

Such changes in Tashkent are radically renewing the city’s economic, environmental, and social profile. Through these processes, vast opportunities and a comfortable living environment are being created for the population.
