Tashkent hosts World Conference on Youth Rights

TASHKENT, August 13. /“Dunyo” IA/. Yesterday, the World Conference on Youth Rights on “Involving Youth in Global Action” kicked off in Tashkent, reports “Dunyo” IA correspondent.

Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva, Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Yu Yu, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, UN Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth Affairs Jayathma Wickramanayake, Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary General Martin Chungong, OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid, Secretary General of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Mohammad Reza Majidi, Chairman of the Executive Committee – Executive Secretary of the CIS Sergey Lebedev and other heads of international structures addressed the event.

Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva emphasized that in Uzbekistan, the main attention is paid to youth policy. “The fact that over the past 5 years our country has adopted more than 50 laws and other normative legal acts aimed at the rights and interests of youth, is a clear confirmation of this policy”, said the head of the upper house of Parliament. – An Agency for Youth Affairs has been created under the government, youth parliaments have been opened in the Oliy Majlis, and there are more than 260 young deputies in local Councils of people’s deputies.

The initiative to hold the conference was put forward by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during his speech on February 22 at the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council. Earlier, at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, the President of Uzbekistan proposed to adopt the Convention on the Rights of Youth, the draft of which is currently being actively developed.

Following the forum, it is planned to adopt a Declaration on the Rights of Youth, which will reflect the results of the discussions at 3 plenary and 3 parallel sessions of the conference, and will also contain recommendations and a call for youth to action.
