Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan became a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This was reported by the press service of the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection.

IUCN warmly welcomes Uzbekistan, which has formally announced its decision to become an IUCN Member State by approving the IUCN Charter.

The State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection has been designated by the country as the responsible body for liaison with the IUCN Secretariat.

“Biodiversity conservation is one of our national priorities, and we are fully committed to creating new protected areas, improving governance, improving environmental monitoring, preventing conflicts between humans and wildlife, and combating illegal trade in flora and fauna. In this direction, we are convinced that in the person of IUCN we have a strong ally, the partnership with which has now become official thanks to our accession,” said J. Kazbekov, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Ecology and Environmental Protection.

“We look forward to discussing new opportunities to support the initiatives of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, put forward at the UN General Assembly (75th and 76th), aimed at improving the environmental situation in the Aral Sea region,” he said.

The variety of natural conditions in Uzbekistan includes vast plains occupied by various kinds of deserts, mountain steppes, meadows and forests, tugai thickets and reservoirs. They form peculiar ecosystems in which rich flora and fauna live.

Most of Uzbekistan is located between the two largest rivers of Central Asia - Amudarya and Syrdarya. Less than 10% of its territory is occupied by irrigated lands in river valleys and oases. Given that the economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, the well-being and sustainable development of a country is highly dependent on the state of its natural resources. Thus, the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in Uzbekistan is one of the priorities of the state environmental policy.
