TASHKENT HOSTS UZBEKISTAN – SPAIN INTER-MFA CONSULTATIONS

On February 26, Tashkent hosted the sixth round of political consultations between Foreign Ministries of Uzbekistan and Spain.

The delegations were led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Dilshod Akhatov and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Spain Fernando Martín Valenzuela Marzo.

Specific measures on further strengthening cooperation between the two countries were discussed and views were exchanged on international and regional issues.

As it was noted during the negotiations, meeting of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev with the King of Spain Felipe VI on June 9, 2017 in Astana gave special dynamics to Uzbekistan – Spain partnership. The established constructive and trust-based dialogue between the Heads of states opens up new prospects for further development of mutually beneficial relations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, the sides confirmed their interest in participation of Spanish companies in projects on establishing high-tech industries in Uzbekistan in various sectors of the economy, including, agricultural sector, electrical, chemical, construction and pharmaceutical industries, mechanical engineering, textile and food industries, tourism. It was noted that holding the first meeting of Intergovernmental Commission on cooperation in economy and industry in 2019 will allow to expand cooperation, support direct ties between entrepreneurs of the two countries at the governmental level.

Interaction in Uzbekistan – EU format, taking into account the active role of Spain in the European Union plays an important role in bilateral relations. The Spanish side supported the beginning of negotiations on a new Agreement on enhanced partnership and cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EU, as well as accession of Uzbekistan to the World Trade Organization. These topics were also discussed by the Spanish delegation during the negotiations in ministries and agencies of Uzbekistan.

Other issues on the common agenda were also discussed at the meeting.

Following the political consultations, the sides signed a Cooperation Program between Foreign Ministries of the two countries for 2019-2020.
