IAEA delegation visits Uzbekistan

Delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) led by the Deputy Director General, Head of the Agency’s Safeguards Department, Massimo Aparo, has visited Uzbekistan.

According to the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Austria, during the visit, the IAEA delegation held meetings with the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Alisher Sultanov, First Deputy Director of Uzatom Agency Bakhrom Mansurov, President of the Academy of Sciences Bekzod Yuldashev, Chairman of the State Committee for Industrial Safety Bakhtiyor Gulyamov. The guests visited the research nuclear reactor of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences and Tashkent branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute).
 
At the meetings, views were exchanged on the current state of cooperation between the IAEA Department of Safeguards and organizations of Uzbekistan and, in particular, the State Committee for Industrial Safety. It was noted that over the past year, cooperation through the Department of Safeguards has significantly improved and, despite the situation with the coronavirus pandemic, in September this year, a mission of IAEA inspectors to Uzbekistan was successfully carried out.
 
During the visit, the details of Uzbekistan’s participation in the IAEA comprehensive capacity-building initiative to strengthen the effectiveness of the national authority responsible for safeguards implementation, as well as the country’s existing system of accounting for and control of nuclear material were discussed.
