International cooperation in dam safety discussed

Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Inspectorate for Control and Supervision over the Technical Condition and Safety of Large and Especially Important Water Facilities under the Cabinet of Ministers (Gosvodkhoznadzor) of Uzbekistan have taken part in the workshop “International legal foundations of dam safety” organized at the initiative of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), via videoconference.

The event was also attended by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Central Asia and Head of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), Natalia Gherman, leading international experts in this sphere, as well as representatives of Central Asian countries and Afghanistan.
 
During the workshop, information and experience were exchanged on the current state of legal regulation of issues of ensuring the safety of hydraulic structures in the countries of the region. The fruitful cooperation of the countries of the region within the framework of the UN Economic Commission for Europe project “Dam Safety in Central Asia: Capacity-Building and Regional Cooperation” was emphasized. One of the main results, in particular, was the draft Framework Agreement between the five countries on cooperation in safety of hydraulic structures.
 
International experts from the United Kingdom and Canada informed the participants about the best foreign experience in ensuring safety of hydraulic structures.
