Granting Uzbekistan observer status at the EAEU considered

The issue of granting Uzbekistan observer status at the EAEU was considered at the regular meeting of the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission, held last week at the level of deputy prime ministers of the governments of the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Representatives from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan have included this issue on the agenda of the upcoming summit of the heads of the EAEU states for a final decision. The summit is expected to take place in the coming months in Minsk.

In May, at the plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the proposal for Uzbekistan’s participation in the EAEU as an observer was approved. The corresponding official application was sent to the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.

Obtaining observer status will allow Uzbekistan to keep abreast of the work carried out within the EAEU, as well as all important decisions of the Organization. This will contribute to enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EAEU member states, primarily in trade, investment, transport, migration and other priority areas.

Last year, the trade turnover of Uzbekistan with EAEU member states exceeded billion. In 2016, this figure amounted to over billion.
