Further steps to develop the textile industry discussed in Tashkent

TASHKENT, April 13. /“Dunyo” IA/. Uzbekistan Textile and Garment Industry Association held an online briefing on lifting the boycott of Uzbek cotton, reports “Dunyo” IA correspondent.

The event was organized by Uzbekistan Textile and Garment Industry Association with the assistance of the Ministries of Investments and Foreign Trade, Foreign Affairs. The participants discussed reforms in the textile industry of Uzbekistan, further steps of the industry “outside the boycott”, the benefits of cooperation, collaboration and ambitions to turn Uzbekistan into a Regional Textile Hub.

Speaking about the textile industry in Uzbekistan, experts noted that Uzbekistan is the only country in the world that has managed to completely eradicate forced labor in a very short time and prevent subsequent growth.

The Chief Technical Advisor of the ILO TPM Project in Uzbekistan, Jonas Astrup, noted that Uzbekistan is free from any kind of forced and child labor, and this fact is confirmed by international organizations. Jonas Astrup assured that all doors for cooperation are open in Uzbekistan.

GIZ representative Joanna Moest spoke about the project “Sustainability and Value Added in the Cotton Economy”, which has already begun to bear fruit. She also informed about the workshops on the implementation of world certificates and training of merchandisers as part of the Fashion Incubator Tashkent project.

General Director at Silverleafe Dan Patterson shared his personal experience of doing business in Uzbekistan. He told his vision as an investor, as an industry expert about changes in the business environment in the country, in particular the textile industry. He noted that Silverleafe will work hard to attract international brands to Uzbekistan.

Chairman of Uzbekistan Textile and Garment Industry Association, Ilkhom Khaydarov, noted that the lifting of the boycott is a historic event that has become a turning point for the development of Uzbekistan's textile industry. This is one of the few measures that today contributes to the formation of a positive background in relation to the Uzbek textile industry, the growth of exports, attraction of investments, the creation of new jobs for millions of people in the country, the creation of a new responsible business model based on the principles of decent work at all levels of the chain supplies.

As previously reported, on March 10, the Cotton Campaign announced the end of the call for a global boycott of Uzbek cotton.
