Constitutional Commission receives over 2,000 proposals in two days

An important process, the constitutional reform, is underway in Uzbekistan. The draft Constitutional Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On introducing amendments and addenda to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan” was adopted in the first reading in the lower house of Parliament and on June 25 was submitted for public discussion.

The draft law is being discussed in all agencies and organizations with the participation of the general public, proposals are being made.

An event held on the draft Constitutional Law at the Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan was attended by the First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, Chairman of the Constitutional Commission A. Saidov, Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency A. Burkhanov, agency staff and media representatives.

Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency A. Burkhanov spoke about the importance of constitutional reforms, planned innovations and changes, and the participation of the Agency in this political process.

Chairman of the Constitutional Commission A. Saidov spoke about the activities of the Commission and, in particular, about the current events. Thus, the Constitutional Commission has carried out large-scale activity to improve the Basic Law with the involvement of research institutions, specialists from relevant ministries and agencies, and experts in this field. The constitutional experience of developed countries has been deeply and comprehensively studied. The proposed draft Constitutional Law provides for over 170 changes to more than 60 articles of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan. It includes norms of direct action aimed at ensuring and protecting the personal, social, economic, political, cultural and environmental rights and interests of citizens from different social strata of society.

“The constitutional reforms are planned to be carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the Commission worked on amendments and additions to the Basic Law, studied proposals and comments, after which it developed a draft Constitutional Law and submitted it to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The second stage is the submission of the draft law for public discussion. The public discussion is taking place from June 25 to July 5 this year. The Constitution is our main document, which concerns all of us. That is why everyone should take an active part in this process and express their opinion. It should be noted that 2,658 proposals and comments were received on June 25-26. Most of the proposals received were sent by representatives of the population.

The third step is holding a referendum. This process will reflect the attitude of our people to today’s reforms. It is noteworthy that our citizens are active in the process of constitutional reforms”, Akmal Saidov said.

At the event, the participation of the Anti-Corruption Agency in this process, the proposals, in particular, the norms reflected in the draft Constitutional Law on Combating Corruption were discussed.
