The Commission on Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Commission on Gender Equality of the Youth Parliament under the Senate held a meeting dedicated to the International Day of the Girl Child.
Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Chairperson of the Commission on Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva addressed the event.
The event was also attended by the heads of a number of ministries and agencies, as well as higher education institutions.
On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
Participants of the event noted that consistent measures are being taken in medicine to ensure the healthy development of girls from early childhood and to improve their medical literacy.
Special attention is also paid to support girls in education. This year, special additional quotas have been allocated for them in higher education institutions. In order to provide young people, including girls who strive to get knowledge, with the opportunity to get higher education in 2019/2020 academic year, 59 universities opened correspondence departments, which creates great opportunities, especially for rural girls.
