The main purpose of the NAM’s visit is to assess the pre-referendum situation and prepare for this political event in Uzbekistan.
At the meeting, Senior Adviser on New Voting Technologies at OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Vladimir Misev noted that the timely invitation by the Central Election Commission of the OSCE/ODIHR to conduct an assessment mission to prepare for the upcoming republican referendum fully complies with the requirements of international electoral standards.
The Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Zayniddin Nizamkhodjayev, informed the experts about the ongoing activities for the preparation and holding of the republican referendum and emphasized that consistently ongoing work on the reform of the Constitution is an important political event in the life of the country and people.
“On June 20 this year, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, at the meeting with members of the Constitutional Commission for the Reform of the Constitution, dwelled on four priority areas of constitutional reforms and made proposals for each of them. The President also proposed to consider the draft Constitution at a nationwide discussion and adopt it through a referendum”, Mr. Nizamkhodjayev noted.
Following the meeting, OSCE/ODIHR NAM experts welcomed the ongoing work in the country to improve electoral legislation and practice and expressed confidence that the upcoming republican referendum would be held at a high organizational level based on generally recognized international democratic principles.
