Australia and New Zealand to host 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

10.07.2020 13:37
Australia and New Zealand will host FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.

It should be noted that the tournament for the first time in history will be held in two countries. Australia and New Zealand bid received 22 of the 35 votes cast by the FIFA Council members.

The joint bid got the nod ahead of Colombia, which was the only other rival in the running after Brazil and Japan dropped out of the race earlier in June.

“An Australia – New Zealand FIFA Women’s World Cup would embody our passion for women’s football and proud commitment to equality and fairness, creating a profound and enduring legacy for the future of women’s football within the region and beyond”, said Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand in a joint letter to the FIFA Council.

The 2023 version will be the first in the women’s game to feature 32 sides – up from the current 24. The date of the tournament is unknown.
