30.10.2020 18:13

At the meeting with the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva, Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, first of all congratulated Uzbekistan on its election to the UN Human Rights Council for 2021-2023 and noted that this is the result of large-scale efforts carried out on ensuring human rights, including child and forced labour elimination, and effective implementation of ILO conventions.

According to the upper house of Parliament, the impact of coronavirus infection on the countries’ economy was also discussed during the talks.

It was noted that the labour market of all states has suffered. Rising unemployment and poverty in the face of the pandemic have become a serious problem even in the most developed countries.

Guy Ryder expressed gratitude to the Uzbek side for conducting a joint study on the impact of COVID-19 on the labour market and social protection, which made it possible to identify the most vulnerable segments of the population and formulate targeted support measures for them.

He also noted ILO's readiness to assist in implementation of Uzbekistan's initiatives to create decent and high-quality jobs for inclusive economic growth, improve the quality of labour force and its mobility in the post-crisis period, and strengthen social dialogue by including them in the new Country Program of Cooperation between Uzbekistan and ILO for 2021-2025.

Tanzila Narbayeva has also met with the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), António Vitorino, who noted the large-scale reforms carried out in the country in recent years aimed at protecting the rights and improving the living conditions of migrant workers abroad.

At the meeting, a Cooperation Agreement was signed with the Government of Uzbekistan.
