Meeting of the Advisory Board of the IFC Project on Sustainable Cotton Supply Chain Development in Uzbekistan

Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade Sardor Umurzakov took part in the third meeting of the Advisory Board of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) IFC Project on Sustainable Cotton Supply Chain Development in Uzbekistan, via videoconference.

According to the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade, the event was attended by representatives of the World Bank Group, GIZ, the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the Responsible Sourcing Network and non-governmental organizations that are part of the Cotton Campaign coalition and foreign textile companies.
 
On behalf of the Uzbek side, the meeting was attended by the leadership of the Ministries of Investments and Foreign Trade, Agriculture, Water Management, Employment and Labor Relations, Uzbekistan Textile Industry Association, sectoral agencies and local authorities, as well as heads of cotton and textile clusters.
 
The IFC Project on Sustainable Cotton Supply Chain Development in Uzbekistan was launched in 2017 to facilitate the transformation of the cotton industry in Uzbekistan by implementing market-driven solutions. Through this Project, IFC aims to test and adjust to the conditions of Uzbekistan a credible methodology for implementing a sustainable cotton standard system based on the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) principles with the aim to have BCI approve Uzbekistan as a country in which it can license farms producing Better Cotton, build up a dialogue and follow-up activities with all stakeholders to ensure that solutions piloted under the IFC project will be scalable at the country level and others.
 
At the meeting, the current results of the Project to promote reforms in the cotton sector and introduction of modern methods of cotton production that meet the requirements of sustainability and responsible supply of international markets were discussed in detail.
 
Following the meeting, an agreement was reached to intensify the joint development of the draft Agreement on Responsible Sources of Supply, which will allow cotton and textile clusters of Uzbekistan to establish direct cooperation with the world’s largest brands in the near future.
